This photo is one of a collection of 14 of the Battalion found by a building contractor who was working on an unoccupied house in Aldershot and deposited by him at the Army Medical Museum there; three of the photos are named and the original owner, L/Corporal Greenaway, has been identified by his being the only common denominator to these three photos.

Artist Rifles - A sepia photograph of a number of recruits awaiting attestation into the Regiment in 1914 shortly after the outbreak of the 1st World War. Seated centre front with a cloth cap is Mr W S Shepherd. He enlisted into the Regiment and was later commissioned into the Wiltshire Regiment, serving throughout the war in the 2nd Battalion. After the war he wrote the history of the Battalion in the Great War. He returned to civilian life after the war, re-joining on the outbreak of the 2nd World War. During the 2nd World War he commanded both the 7th and 30th Battalions of the Wiltshire Regiment and ended up commanding the 15th Infantry Training Centre. [Note Although the Artist Rifles deployed a front line Battalion during the war, in the main they provided officer recruits for the remainder of the Army]
