1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh’s Royal Regiment - A black and white photograph of the Corps of Drums, led by acting Drum Major Corporal Venn, on the parade square, Clifton Barracks, Minden, West Germany, 1968. This photograph was taken shortly after the issuing of the new drummers’ helmets, minus the helmet plates that followed a short while later. The bass drummer in the centre is Dave Smith who after retirement became the chairman of the RGBW Reading branch of the Regimental Association. The tenor drummer (left, 2nd row) is Bob Safe who was killed in a tragic accident on 9 November 1968. While carrying out maintenance on the Drums Platoon's Armoured Personnel Carriers, he was crushed to death between a vehicle and a garage wall. He was later buried in his home town of Salisbury.
