2nd Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white photograph showing Sgt 4217 H Reynolds who was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. He was part of the 13th Mounted Infantry Company under the command of Lt G P S Hunt. They were formed in 1900 and operated in the eastern Transvaal, initially under General Bullock, then later under General Hamilton. On 9 May 1902 a large group of Boers broke through the line at the part where Sgt Reynolds? detachment was posted. He later wrote "We were going leisurely along one day when Commandant de Wet and 500 of his men came straight for my section and I got out of his way sharp as I only had 17 all told, and came in on his rear and killed one, captured 2 prisoners with about 10 horses and 8 rifles that were dropped. I did not fire but about 20 rounds, my attention was occupied in watching the enemies? moves". As a result of this action he was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the DCM. He went on to tell how no man from his section was killed or wounded, and what a high value he placed on their lives. After the war he went with the Regiment to Egypt. He returned home on leave in 1904, when this photo was taken in Reading. Whilst on leave he died of disease. He served in the regiment from 16.10 1894 to 13.8.1904.
