1st Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A sepia digital photograph of a wooden mass grave marker at Hebuterne, France. The following soldiers were buried here. Private 39265 Herbert Payne, Private 39292 Sidney Saunders Berridge, Private 17046 Albert Henry Fitt, L/Corporal 9922 C. Hatchett, Private 39225 A.S. Prosser, Private Henry Wale. The Battalion would have erected this grave marker before moving on to a different location.These soldiers died in a bomb attack by the Germans on a small party of Berkshires at about 2300 hrs on 4th September 1916 at Hebuterne. Seven men were killed in this attack, one was wounded and two were captured. This marker was later removed and the men buried in Hebuterne Communal Cemetery, France with Commonwealth War grave headstones.
