2nd Bn, Wiltshire Regiment - A black and white photograph showing officers on the ranges with the new Bren Gun. As the clouds of war developed over Europe the British Army continued training with the weapons available. Budgets were tight between the wars and the forces very much under-resourced. One exception was the introduction of a magazine fed, air cooled .303 light machine gun called the 'Bren gun'. It was to prove very reliable and, with minor modifications, it remained in service in the British Army until the early 1970s. Here we see the senior officers of the 2nd Battalion on Bellerby ranges, Catterick, Yorkshire familiarising themselves with the newly issued weapon in 1939. Nearest the camera is the Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Oliphant, MC. He had served in the Regiment in the 1st World War, was captured at Neuve Chapelle in 1915 and spent the rest of the war making repeated and determined efforts to escape. This image appears in ?The Wiltshire Regiment 1914 ? 1959?, a photographic history, page 44.
