1st/4th Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white digital photograph of L/Corporal F. Neale. He is wearing his hot weather overseas uniform with a pith helmet in Italy. The helmet has a blue heart shown onto it. On his right lower sleeve are four overseas chevrons indicating four years service which would probably date this photo to 1918. [Details of the blue heart badge - Apparently on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, all troops were to have a distinguishing mark on the backs of the covers of their steel helmets. The C.O. of the 1/4th chose a heart in blue serge which, along with the covers themselves, was paid for out of the Battalion's Christmas Fund. The idea must have stuck and was continued on the Pith-Helmet.]
