1st Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white photocopy of a photograph of Lieutenant Colonel William Kerr McClintock, the Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion in 1907. He joined the 49th of Foot in 1879 going with the Battalion to Gibraltar in 1881. The next year he was in Egypt where he took part in the surrender of Kafr Dowar. In 1885 he went to Suakin, and was present at the actions of Hasheen, Ginnis and Tofrek, where he commanded 'A' Company in that battle. He was seconded to the Queensland forces in 1891 assisting the Australian Staff until 1895. In the Boer War he served in the 2nd Battalion, forming its Mounted Infantry Company. He was invalided home from South Africa; then, after recovering, he joined the 1st Battalion in Gibraltar. Taking command of this Battalion in 1904, he led them for four years, during which time he took them to the Curragh, Dublin and the Belfast Riots of 1907. He was promoted to Brigadier-General and given command of the South Midland Infantry Brigade, which went to France in 1915. He was awarded a CB and retired at the end of the 1st World War. He died in 1940.

The Regiment arrived in Gibraltar on the 13th March 1881 and the following July changed its title to the 1st (Princess of Charlotte of Wales?s) Berkshire Regiment. We believe this photograph was taken to commemorate the changeover in title.
