6th Bn, Wiltshire Regiment - A digital black and white image of one of the Battalion's machine gun sections. It is unusual in as much as it shows them practicing with the Lewis Machine gun fixed to a tripod. This image came from the papers of Lieutenant William Absalom Lock and it is believed that he is shown on the right of the photograph. From his letters he states ?From a letter dated 20th January 1915 (while training in Weston Supermare):I have joined the machine guns of our Regiment there are going to be four with two officers and 48 men 24 in the teams & 24 in the reserve.? From a letter dated 9th March 1915 (Weston Supermare):?I?m properly in the machine gunners & it?s a good job there are two officers & four guns. We have two each to look after. By the 30th March, the Regiment were back in Perham Down Camp?. From a letter dated 30th April 1915: ?Just a hurried note to thank you for the M.G. parts I got safely today. Though we are having the ?Lewis Gun? & not the Vickers or Maxim they will be most useful in teaching the principles? He was born October 1895 and Killed in Action 25th September 1915 (Buried at Brown's Road Cemetery, Festubert).
