Leading are the assault pioneers wearing white aprons and carrying ceremonial silver axes. (L to R) Corporal Annear, Sergeant Rose, Corporal Irving, followed by the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Coxon. By tradition the pioneer sergeants in British army infantry battalions were the only soldiers allowed to wear a beard. The leading of the battalion by the pioneers on ceremonial occasions recalled the times when they had to clear a way across country for the main body of troops to follow
