99th Regiment - A sepia portrait photograph of Lieutenant Colonel Sir John Gaspard Le Marchant in civilian clothes. Born in 1804, the son of a noted Peninsula general who was killed at Salamanca in 1812, he joined the 99th Foot in 1839 having purchased the lieutenant-colonelcy. Aged thirty six when he took command, he was in effect junior to his majors, several of the captains and one of the subalterns. Known unofficially as 'Don Gaspard', he was a colourful character, who achieved great prestige for himself and his Regiment. He stood no nonsense from his own officers and men, but even less from outsiders who tried to interfere with them. The Duke of Cambridge said, later, that the 99th Foot under Sir John were about the smartest and best-drilled regiment in the service. When the Regiment embarked for Australia in 1842, Sir John exchanged once again and, in 1856, became a Major-General. He was later the Governor of Newfoundland, of Nova Scotia and of Malta. In 1865 he received a KCB and commanded the Madras Army for three years. He died in 1874, aged seventy. Although his time in the 99th was short, his influence was such that the Regimental Depot in Devizes was named after him. This image is featured in ?The Wiltshire Regiment 1756-1914.
