1st Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A sepia photo of the Battalion Athletics Team, winner of the Presidency and Assam District Athletic Championship, in India, sometime between 1921 and 1932, probably towards the end of that period. This photo is one of a collection of 14 of the Battalion found by a building contractor who was working on an unoccupied house in Aldershot and deposited by him at the Army Medical Museum there; three of the photos are named and the original owner, L/Corporal Greenaway, has been identified by his being the only common denominator to these three photos.

On the outbreak of the First World War he rejoined and became the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 8th (Service) Battalion with whom he won a Distinguished Conduct Medal. This photo was taken in India

His Distinguished Conduct Medal was awarded for his actions on the 25th September 1915 when the Battalion led the attack on Hulluch on the first day of the Battle of Loos.

In the rear row of the photo, from left to right, are Private Condon, Private Morris, L/Corporal Boyes, L/Corporal Lainsbury and L/Corporal Stone; seated in the front row, from left to right, are Private Haywood, Private Colley, Sergeant Mccalm, Lieutenant C W Stevens who was the Platoon Commander at the time

Seated on the left is Colour Sergeant Lainsbury who retired around 1909 but who was recalled to the Colours in 1914 as the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 8th (Serevice) Battalion where he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1915. Bandmaster Dore  had fought at Tofrek in the Sudan, Sergeant Addicot was awarded a DCM in 1918 whilst serving with the British West Indies Regiment in Egypt. Sergeant Farmer became a Sergeant Major in the 5th (Service) Battalion. He was killed in action on the 13th October 1915. Sergeant Lainsbury was recalled in 1914 and became the RSM of the 8th [Service] Battalion winning a DCM]
