99th Regiment - A sepia portrait photograph of Major General John Napper Jackson in civilian clothes. He was the first officer to serve in the 99th and subsequently become its Colonel. His army career started in the 94th Foot in 1805 at the age of nine and he was only fourteen when he commenced five years of active service in the Peninsula and was present at some thirty battles and actions including the storming of Ciudad Rodrigo, Nive, and Nivelle. He received the Peninsula Medal and ten clasps before he was nineteen. He joined the Light Company of the 99th on its formation in 1824 as an experienced fighting soldier with twenty years service, but still only twenty nine years old. He went with the Regiment to Mauritius and Australia, where he acted in command for two years during Colonel Despard?s absence in New Zealand. He later commanded the Regiment in Ireland and Aldershot where they gained a tremendous reputation for smartness in dress and drill. Afterwards described by a fellow officer as 'Moltke of the Nines? he was seldom seen off the barrack square and never known to go on leave. There was a regimental legend that he had once been observed in plain clothes! He became the Colonel of the Regiment from 1863 until his death at the age of seventy in 1866. His photograph appears on page 55 of The Wiltshire Regiment 1756-1914. Photographer: H Mullins of Jersey and 230 Regent Street, London
