8th Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white copy of a photograph of Private Frank Gray. He was born in Oxford in 1880 and was educated at Rugby School. He became a solicitor and held a number of legal appointments until he resigned in 1916 to join the army. Declining promotion, he served throughout in the ranks, joining the 8th Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment in June 1917. He served in 6 Platoon of 'B' Company, remaining with the Battalion until the end of the war. After the war, Frank Gray led a colourful life. He worked with labourers in order to study their conditions and toured the Oxfordshire workhouses as a tramp. He is shown in the photograph in one of his disguises. In 1926, by way of a change he crossed Africa from west to east in 58 days driving a 7hp car. In between times he served on the Oxfordshire County Council, served as a JP and was Member of Parliament for Oxford City from 1922 -1924. His publications included: Confessions of a Private; Confessions of a Candidate; The Tramp (1931) and numerous political pamphlets. He died in 1935.

99th Regiment - The Regiment was stationed in Cape Town from 1865 to 1869. During that time it was responsible for providing the garrison on the island of St Helena in the Atlantic. ?F? ?G?, ?H? and ?I? companies arrived there on 19 May 1867. Here we see the nine officers who went with those companies, Major Ely, Captains Gray, Day and Stewart, Ensigns Kennedy, Cooch, Blaxland, Banfather and Macklin. These officers are wearing 'diced bands' around their caps, authorised only two months earlier to signify their designation as a Lowland Regiment. This photograph appears on page 15 of The Wiltshire Regiment 1756-1914

(front row) Privates Smith, McCormack, L/Corporal Fenton, Corporal Hemus, 2nd Lieutenant Woolnough, 2nd Lieutenant Hoare, L/Corporal Milen, L/Corporal Howard-Jones, L/Corporal Rapson. Boy Rogers later served in the 2nd World War where he was awarded the Victoria Cross in Italy. He was killed in action at the same time.
