1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh?s Royal Regiment - A black and white photograph of the royal guard of honour for Malta's Independence Celebrations, 20 September 1964. His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh visited the Battalion during the day, and the same guard took part in the main parade that evening at Floriana. The guard consisted of 79 hand picked soldiers under the command of Captain M Draper. Here we see the Guard of Honour presenting arms, with the Queen's colour lowered at the front. [The lowering or 'vailing' of Colours as part of a salute is very ancient. Sir John Smith wrote in 1591, 'If a King or great Prince passeth by, the Ensigne is to vaile his Colours close to the ground with his knee bending, in token of allegiance and submission' . This was officially recognised in Army regulations in 1799 and carried through to the present day].
