1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh?s Royal Regiment - A black and white photograph of a trench position in Cyprus in 1964. The Battalion?s first task on arriving in Cyprus in February was to secure the perimeter of Nicosia airfield. The Regimental journal recorded 'For many in the company digging-in had a purpose for the first time and holes went down and overhead cover went up in record time'. Here we see one of ?B? Company?s emplacements with Privates Moody (left) and Downs (right) taking a rest from their labours. The Battalion remained until March then went back to Malta. Rifle companies returned to the island over the next eighteen months.

1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh?s Royal Regiment - A black and white photograph of a 3 inch mortar detachment of ?B? Company dug in at Tarhuna, Libya, North Africa in 1963. Each mortar required a crew of three, with a section of mortars controlled and directed by a Mortar Fire Controller. Membership of the mortar platoon was considered to be an honour, until they were required to man-pack the equipment. Left to right are Privates Wheaton, Downs and Emm. In later years many of these men suffered from premature deafness because, at this time, there were no ear defenders.
