He was killed in action on the 5th August 1944. He had previously been mentioned in dispatches and was the son of john and Kathleen Douglas, husband of Annie Hildegarde of Dunmurry, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland. He is buried in the Tilly-Sur-Seulles War Cemetery (Grave VII.C.3)

99th Regiment - A sepia portrait photograph of General Sir Howard Douglas, G.C.B., G.C.M.G., F.R.S., D.C.L.. in civilian clothes. He was the Colonel of the 99th from 1841 to 1851. He was originally a Second Lieutenant in the Artillery in 1793, he was shipwrecked in Newfoundland and served there, and in Nova Scotia and Canada, for five years. He then became Adjutant of the 5th Artillery Regiment in Plymouth, and served with the Royal Horse Artillery before joining Congreves Mortar Brigade. In 1803 he was a Major in the Royal York Rangers, and the Commandant of a department of the Royal Military Collage. A Brevet Lieutenant Colonel in 1806, and on a special mission to the Peninsula, he was present at the battle of Corunna, before accompanying an expedition to Walcheren and the siege of Flushing. He became a Brevet Colonel in 1814, and received a Spanish decoration. Commandant of the Royal Military Collage for many years, he was famous for his publications. These included a Treatise on naval gunnery, which led to the establishment of the first naval gunnery school, HMS Excellent. In 1823 he was Governor of New Brunswick, and later the Ionian Islands. He was made a Lieutenant General in 1837, and subsequently a full General.

He had previous service in the Hussars and Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. In this image he is wearing hospital blues indicating he was at some point wounded. He is commemorated in Maryport, the town of his birth.
