49th Regiment - A black and white photocopy of a photograph of Private Robert Cross, pictured here in Reading at the age of 82 wearing his Crimea Campaign medals. He had clasps for 'Alma', 'Inkerman' and 'Sebastopol' together with the Turkish Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He enlisted in 1847, joining the 49th in Richmond Barracks, Dublin. His wife was the school mistress for the 49th and, in that capacity, served in Malta, the West Indies and at home. He was with the 49th in Ireland when the Smith O'Brien conspiracy occurred, followed by riots throughout the Country. The Grenadier Company of the 49th captured Smith O'Brien in a garden in Ballingarry. In 1853 Private Cross went to Malta, and, the following year, was mobilized for the Crimean War. He remembered disembarking at Scutari where the Regiment was met by the band of a Turkish Regiment who 'played them in' to their barracks where a food had been prepared by the Turks, but, as it consisted of boiled rice and oil, the 49th did not make a very hearty meal.
