This photograph was taken in Mandora Barracks, Aldershot, just prior to the Battalion's embarkation for the Western Front on the 13th August 1914. 49th Regiment - A sepia photograph of the officers with the Colours in Gibraltar in 1881. The Regiment arrived in Gibraltar on the 13th March 1881 and the following July changed its title to the 1st (Princess of Charlotte of Wales?s) Berkshire Regiment. We believe this photograph was taken to commemorate the changeover in title. It shows, in the rear row from left to right an unidentified officer (Paymaster or doctor), Major Fox, Lieutenant Hemphill, Lieutenant Alcock, an unidentified Private, Lieutenant Gordon, an unidentified Private, Lieutenant Burney, sitting, Lieutenant McCracken, Captain Rathbone, Major Huyshe, Colonel Corban, Major Gillespie, Captain Green, an unidentified officer and Captain Kingand; sitting in the front are Lieutenant Whittall, Lieutenant McClintock, Lieutenant Delamain .

2nd Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A sepia photograph of the grave of Colonel Ernest Henry Burney CB. He died at Neuilly, France, in the summer of 1905 aged forty-four. He was present at the surrender of Kafr Dowar in the Egyptian Expedition of 1882 ( medal, bronze star); In the Boer War (1899-02), he commanded the 2nd. Battalion for twelve months, afterwards commanding a section of the lines of communication and a mobile column, taking part in the operations in the Transvaal and Cape Colony. [The location of this grave is not known]

The location is further complicated by the name of the photographer as coming from Fermoy in Ireland ? The Battalion was not in Ireland during Lt Col Graham's command]
