62nd Regiment - A sepia portrait photograph of Corporal George Bryant. He was born in Kensington, London, in 1843. He lived in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, enlisting into the Regiment in 1860. Joining the Regiment in Nova Scotia, he later served in Ireland (1866-68) and India at Lucknow and Barrackpore. While in India he won two Queen?s Army Best Shots medals, for 1871 and 1872 which he is seen wearing in this photograph. He was presented with the silver medal in 1871 in a general parade before the entire brigade by Major -General. Sir Henry Tombs, KCB, VC, commanding the Oudh Division. He was ill for a number of years and died in India at the age of thirty-five. The Army Best Shot medal, authorised in 1869, became obsolete in 1883, but was re-instituted in 1923 as the King?s medal for the Champion Shot in the Army. The 62nd Foot also furnished the champion shot for the British army in 1866 (Corporal C. Smith) and 1869-7 (Sergeant C. Rogers).
