1st Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white photocopy of a photograph of a Maxim gun detachment in Ireland (Dublin) in 1907. At this time each battalion had two such teams. This team is under the command of Lieutenant Benjamin Gonville Bromhead (Left). He was a member of the famous Bromhead family, one of whom won the VC at Roorke?s Drift with the 24th of Foot in 1879. He was with the Regiment for many years. In the South African War he served as a Special Service Officer with the Rhodesian Field Force and with Thorneycroft?s Mounted Infantry. He went to France in 1914 but was badly wounded shortly after arriving. He died in 1939. His son followed him into the Regiment becoming the last Commanding officer of the Royal Berkshire Regiment in 1959.

1st Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white photograph of ?H? or Captain B.G. Bromhead's Company in Dover in 1911. He is sat front centre in civilian clothes and to his right is Colour Sergeant Brooks who was a Battalion sportsman of some note, in particular in the Tug of War. Captain Bromhead's son later joined the Regiment and was the last Commanding Officer of the Battalion prior to its amalgamation with the Wilsthire Regiment in 1959.

This team were the winners of the Bronze medal, tournament, Irish Command ands second in the Naval and Military Tournament at Olympia, London. 1st Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white photograph showing the mobilization of the Battalion which took place between the 4th and the 8th August 1914 at Mandora Barracks, Aldershot. The mobilization was part of a previously practiced exercise and by all accounts went very smoothly. As well as getting the men and kit ready, the Battalion had to absorb a significant number of reservists. This image shows the 1st ½ Battalion about to entrain at Farnborough railway station en-route to Southampton 12th August 1914. General Sir T. Perrott bids them farewell and is seen here talking to Captain Bromhead.

Royal Berkshire Regiment - A a black and white  photograph of  Brigadier Orde Wingate [Right]  during the Chindit Operation in Burma during the 2nd World War discussing Operation ‘Longcloth’ . Left is Major Robert Benjamin Gonville Bromhead a member of his staff.George Bromhead took up his position as Brigade-Major at the Chindit training camp in Saugor, where he assisted Wingate with his operational planning for the first expedition into Burma. Major Bromhead was later  ordered by Wingate to take command of 4 Column, a Gurkha unit that formed part of Northern Group in 1943.
