1st Volunteer Bn, Berkshire Regiment - A black and white photograph of Private Ernest Bowden together with his wife Julia. He served with his unit in the Boer war attached to the 2nd Battalion. He later sent a letter from South Africa which was printed in the local paper; it read ?Next morning at three o? clock we were to pack up and come down to Kronstad. When we arrived there we were sent 30 miles down the line and got there about four o? clock. We were about two miles from water and six miles from any other troops. We entrenched ourselves as best we could, but it came on to rain with thunder and lighting something awful. Next morning about five we were surprised by a large company of Boers, mustering I should say about 500. They took us all prisoner, demanded our arms, smashed our rifles and set fire to the train, and could have done more had not an armoured train came up and fired on them and driven them off.
