1st Bn, Wiltshire Regiment - A sepia portrait photograph of Captain Wilfred Nash Bolton who joined the Regiment in 1883. He was an instructor in fortifications and gymnastics at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, from 1892-99. He was an international rugby player being capped for England eleven times. An article in the magazine Field entitled 'Giants of Rugby of the past? referred to him as 'one of the strongest men I have ever known. In a match against Scotland Bolton picked up his opponent (Reid) and threw him over the ropes, with the result that he (Reid) never played again'. He was a good hurdler and sprinter and a fine gymnast. He went to South Africa in command of 'F' Company, and at Slabbert's Nek on the 12 July 1900 he led the Battalion along a goat track on the side of a precipice in fog, went round the enemy left flank, coming in behind the Boers who departed in a hurry. One month later he was wounded at Hamman's Kraul. He appears to have had some legal training as he acted as the prosecutor in the trial of Lieutant 'Breaker' Morant of the Bushveldt Carabineers for killing Boer prisoners of war. Lieutenant Morant was found guilty and later executed. After the war, Major Bolton was appointed as the resident magistrate in Cyprus. He retired in 1905.
