2nd Bn, Wiltshire Regiment - A black and white copy of a photo of Captain William Atkins in India before the Boer war. Captain William Atkins was born in June 1861 and, after service of six years in the ranks, was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Irish Rifles, in July 1888. He was later promoted into the Wiltshire Regiment as a Captain in July 1896 and commanded 'G' Company in Guernsey and Alderney in 1897. He did not go to South Africa with main body of the Battalion but followed up, joining the Mounted Infantry, with which he saw much service, eventually commanding it. He was present at Rensburg, the relief of Kimberley, the pursuit and capture of Cronje (a Boer general) and in every action up to the taking of Pretoria, including battles at Jacobsdal, Diamond Hill and Sannas Post. Whilst serving in the 2nd Mounted Infantry he was killed in action at Nooitgedact on 13 December 1900.
