Wiltshire Home Guard - A black and white photograph of a Wiltshire Home Guard unit, taken outside the Red Lion Inn, dated October 1942. The location and people in this photograph were not originally named, but following an appeal on the Museum's website the pub was confirmed in August 2009 as the Red Lion, Castle Eaton, licensee Reginald G King, and the unit as the Blunsdon Platoon. The landlady at the time provided the information given here from a copy of the photograph in the pub which named all those present. All rows read from left to right. Top row:- W. Kemble, E. 2nd Bn, Wiltshire Regiment - A black and white photograph of the Battalion motor cycle team at the start of the 1939 Army Motor Cycle Championship, with (left to right) Corporal Wright; Lieutenant Archer; Private Gatehouse. Points were awarded for speed, map reading and the ability to move the motor cycle over rugged terrain. The Battalion did not win the Championship but the motor cyclists' skills were tested for real the following year on the retreat to Dunkirk, where on many occasions the only means of communication was via the 'Donar' [Dispatch rider].

Royal Berkshire Militia - A sepia portrait photograph of George Bramstone Eyre Archer-Houblon of Welford. He was born in 1843 the only son of Charles Eyre (formerly Archer-Houblon of Welford who died 1886). He was promoted to Lieutenant on the 4th May 1871, to Captain on the 5th February 1873, to Major 22nd May 1886 and to Lieutenant Colonel 16th June 1888; he resigned on the 28th March 1894, with the rank of Colonel. He married Lady Alice, daughter of Alexander, 25th Earl of Crawford. He took the name of Archer-Houblon with the property of Hallingbury, Essex in 1893.
