1st Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white photograph showing the mobilization of the Battalion which took place between the 4th and the 8th August 1914 at Mandora Barracks, Aldershot. The mobilization was part of a previously practiced exercise and by all accounts went very smoothly. As well as getting the men and kit ready, the Battalion had to absorb a significant number of reservists. This image shows the 2nd Battalion marching into the platform area of Farnbourgh railway station en-route to Southampton on the 12th August 1914. Leading on horseback is Captain Hunt and the leading soldier is Sergeant Major Vesey. [Captain Hunt was killed in action on the 23rd March 1918 and Sergeant Major Vesey was killed in action on the 25th September 1915 whilst serving with the 2nd Battalion having been commissioned]

A digital black and white image of Lieutenant Cates briefing soldiers of 1 platoon, A Company during the exercise to test the territorial soldiers, although a staged photograph this image gives a clear view of the equipment worn at that time. The soldier in the centre is carrying an A41 man-pack radio used at platoon level. On the left of the photograph is Corporal Joe Hunt who had joined the Battalion from the Gloucestershire Regiment. Lieutenent Cates later served in Cyprus with the Battalion and still later transferred to the Royal Army Pay Corps. The Wessex Brigade cap badge with the Brandywine backing is clearly visible.
