49th Regiment - Russian prayer book in Hebrew found after Battle of Alma. It has a note; 'John Grattan 49 Regt Grenadier Company No.2664 this book was found by me after the Battle of Alma on 20 of September 1854'. The first three pages of the book deal with the putting on and arrangement of the tassels and tefillin. There are indications that it was fairly recently printed (in Galicia or South Russia possibly) and it seems to be Hasidic in character. Perhaps it got to the Crimea via a Russian soldier (Jews were enlisted at the time on a quota basis). It would be difficult to identify the edition of the prayer book and its precise date given the numbers of this kind of book that were published.
