He was killed in action on the 9th April 1916 in Mesopotamia . He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial

Services of Major General James Patrick Murray, CB

2nd/66th Regiment – A record of the services of Major General James Patrick Murray, CB. He commanded the battalion in the Peninsula War. He joined the Regiment in 1802 and became a Major in 1804. He commanded them at the crossing of the River Douro where he was wounded. The Duke of Wellington later shook him by the hand and said ‘Murray, you and your men have behaved like lions – I shall never forget you’. In 1809 he was promoted onto the Staff. He died in 1835.
