He was killed in action during the retreat to Dunkirk on the 16th May 1940. A family story is that he as killed by a hand grenade while carrying a wounded soldier on a stretcher. He was given a quick burial in a nearby hedgerow, and his body was never recovered. He was posted as missing believed killed.
