1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh?s Royal Regiment - A contact report which involved a shooting at Three Platoon, ?A? Company in Crossmaglen in October 1983. [A soldier serving at the time, Private Dean Clarke remembered, ?There were two bricks on the border when we came under fire, we were in a static position. We were approached by a ?dicker? earlier in the day, then at about 4.20 pm we came under fire. Private Smith spotted the gunman and reported back to L/Corporal Weaving the position of the gunmen. I had the GPMG but did not return fire as I could not see a target. I was alive to the fact that they may assault in large numbers and me with a limited amount of ammunition. As usual communications were down as we were in dead ground. L/Corporal Weaving and myself gave chase but with no luck.
