Volunteers Needed

Could you be a volunteer at The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum? 

· You would become part of a dedicated and enthusiastic team of volunteers who      contribute enormously to the functioning of the museum. 

· We offer a variety of roles including working with Visitor Services team on the Front Desk, working with our Research Enquiries team or help to maintain our beautiful riverside garden. 

· Whether you can offer time once a week, fortnightly or monthly our volunteering options are flexible and can be arranged to suit you.

· If you are over 18 and are able to offer your time then please do get in touch.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Front Desk Team
You would be part of a dedicated team of volunteers who welcome and engage with visitors to a high standard of customer care.  The role is a vital one to the museum which involves selling tickets and shop items and operating the till.  

No experience required and full training is provided. 

Current vacancies:

·  Wednesday mornings (10am-1.30pm)

·  Saturday mornings (10am-1.30pm) or

·  Tuesday mornings (10am-1.30pm) SCHOOL HOLIDAYS ONLY.

Archives/ Research Enquiries
We are currently looking for volunteers to support the Research Enquiries service.  The service is extremely popular and involves working with our archive collections as well as online databases and other collections. 

Ideally, some research experience would be ideal.  Training is provided.

Current vacancies: 

·   1 x day (10.30am – 3pm), weekdays only (Mondays to Fridays). 

Gardener
We are currently looking for garden volunteers to work in our beautiful riverside garden supporting our garden team.  There are a variety of opportunities to plant, prune and generally maintain this special setting. 

Some gardening experience would be preferable but not essential. 

Current Vacancies: 

·   Summer season only, ½ x day on a weekday to be discussed with the Head Gardener.

A HUGE THANK YOU...to everyone who attended the "WW1 at the Rifles" event this morning. What a fantastic time with lots to do and hands-on fun. A massive thank you to Trowbridge Museum Education team for providing such a wonderful event and making it all possible.

If you've missed today don't worry. The team will be back at the museum on Thursday 26th July 2018 for another wonder-filled WW1 morning.

Object Showcase - Revealed

Remember the mystery object posted on 22 March? We can reveal the item is...a beautiful handcarved comb.

We believe it was used by the Hadendowa clan who joined the Mahdist uprising against the British and Indian troops in the Sudan, North Africa in 1885. This item was recovered by a Royal Berkshire serviceman soon after the Battle of Tofrek on 22 March 1885.

Coming up...FREE Easter Family Event at The Rifles Berkshire & Wiltshire Museum - WWI at The Rifles.

All about the lives of servicemen and civilians at the end of First World War. Lots of fun, hands-on challenges, dressing-up and a photo to take home.  Led by the Trowbridge Museum Education Team.

Children who attend the event can visit the museum for FREE on the day.

Flying our new Royal Berkshire Regiment flag in honour of Tofrek Day today - the day in which the Princess Charlotte of Wales (Berkshire) Regiment was granted the "Royal" title in "recognition of the gallant conduct" shown during the Battle of Tofrek, 22 March 1885.

Object Showcase - New Object on Display

Object Showcase - New Object on Display

A new object is now on display in our Object Showcase.  A beautiful handcrafted item belonging to the Hadendowa clan, part of the Beja tribe.  They joined the Madhist uprising and were part of the surprise attack on the British and Indian troops in the Battle of Tofrek.  The clan’s bravery and valour in battle was widely recognised amongst the troops.
