A new object is now on display in our Objects Showcase. It is a Shako helmet worn by the 99th Regiment of Foot around 1860. Find out more about its design, what is it made of and why there is a funny little person on the back! :0)

A exciting range of events and exhibitions are coming to The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum, Salisbury this summer. 

A Midsummer Nights Dream – Outdoor Theatre

In the stunning surroundings of The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum Gardens in Salisbury, Quantum Theatre presents a magical production of one of Shakespeare’s best loved and enduring comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Doors open at 5pm, so bring a picnic.  Rugs and low-backed chairs welcome.  Performance goes ahead no matter the weather (part of the fun!) so dress accordingly.

WW1 at the Rifles – FREE Family Event

Back by popular demand, a fascinating FREE family event is returning to The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum in Salisbury this Summer.  WW1 at The Rifles will explore life at end of the First World War to find out what happened to soldiers and civilians as their wartime lives ended.

Taking place on Thursday 26th July 2018, 10.30am – 12.30pm and 1.30 – 3pm, there will be fun and fascinating hands-on challenges, dressing-up and period photographs to take home.  In addition to the day’s activities, children who attend the event can also visit the museum for FREE on the day.

The event will take place in the museum’s stunning riverside garden, indoors if raining.

I am a Rifleman – Touring Exhibition

The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum in Salisbury is delighted to announce the opening of a temporary exhibition which tells the extraordinary story of Britain’s largest infantry Regiment; The Rifles.  The exhibition called I am a Rifleman provides a glimpse into the experiences and achievements of soldiers from the Regiment.

 

In the Rifles Regiment, success is based on four core values around their ethos: Innovation, Mutual Respect, Self-Discipline and Forward-Thinking.  This exhibition enables visitors to immerse themselves in twelve stories that bring these four core values to life. Using individual accounts, images and mementoes, I am a Rifleman shows what it means to be a soldier in The Rifles today.

With a quarrel raging between Oberon and Titania, the King and Queen of the fairies, four young lovers become entangled in their magical affray and soon no mortals are safe in those bewitching woods outside Athens…Love, intrigue, magic and mayhem follows.

New objects are now on display throughout May in our Objects Showcase.  Beautifully painted ostrich eggs created by Private F Cook, Wiltshire Regiment while posted in South Africa after the second Boer War in 1902.

The eggs are not often on display due to their fragility so catch them while you can :0).

A fascinating and captivating FREE family storytelling event is coming to The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum in Salisbury this May Half-Term.

“Tales from the Trenches” will be stories told by storyteller Michael O’Leary who will interpret and retell real-life First World War stories from the museum’s Archive collection, specially for a younger audience.

Drop-in, 2 x 30 minute sessions (10.30am and 11.30am)

Suitable for children aged 7 plus.

All children who attend the event must be accompanied by an adult.

Children who attend the event can visit the museum for FREE on the day.

Could you be a volunteer at The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum? 
  • You would become part of a dedicated and enthusiastic team of volunteers who contribute enormously to the functioning of the museum. 
  • We offer a variety of roles including working with Visitor Services team on the Front Desk, working with our Research Enquiries team or help to maintain our beautiful riverside garden. 

  • Whether you can offer time once a week, fortnightly or monthly our volunteering options are flexible and can be arranged to suit you.

  • If you are over 18 and are able to offer your time then please do get in touch.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Front Desk Team

You would be part of a dedicated team of volunteers who welcome and engage with visitors to a high standard of customer care.  The role is a vital one to the museum which involves selling tickets and shop items and operating the till. 

  • No experience required and full training is provided. 

Archives/ Research Enquiries

We are currently looking for volunteers to support the Research Enquiries service.  The service is extremely popular and involves working with our archive collections as well as online databases and other collections. 

  • Ideally, some research experience would be ideal.  Training is provided.

Gardener

We are currently looking for garden volunteers to work in our beautiful riverside garden supporting our garden team.  There are a variety of opportunities to plant, prune and generally maintain this special setting. 

  • Some gardening experience would be preferable but not essential.
